NYC Mayor’s Remark Reveals How School Segregation Works Today

Some say school choice worsens segregation. I tend to agree.

When the mayor recently said that school segregation was directly linked to housing segregation, commentators pointed to the city’s own data that shows 40% of kindergartners do not actually go to their local (or “zoned”) schools. Housing might be part of school segregation, particularly as it relates to the city’s child poverty rate. But the mayor might need to confront the fact that the city’s own school choice system is designed to elaborately shuffle children around so their parents’ “choice” of school mostly preserves class lines.
