An MIT Icon Breaks Down Why Kids Need to Learn to Code

The floor is yours, Dr. Resnick.

Watch Mitch Resnick of MIT’s Media Lab explain why coding is important for children to learn today, what it is and what it isn’t. You’ll hear him define “fluency” as children being able to express themselves using computational languages. And, that referring to children as “digital natives” does more harm than good. But perhaps most of all, I appreciated his comparison of coding to reading and writing. Coding is a literacy practice; it’s the language through which more and more of society functions (or doesn’t). Set aside sixteen minutes and enjoy.
